Let this be our winter

Let this be our winter

by Evan Smith

We’ll say farewell some day,
but not for now. Now we’ll sleep
the serpent’s sleep just before it peels
away with nicks and scrapes its
skin. Look at the serpent slither,
look, let’s look as off it slithers
lithe, but rough, to its hell and learn.

And having looked, so let us wait
and learn to do without pretenses.
