Course length: 8 weeks

  • Intermediate Conversational Latin (3 hrs/week) 
    • MWF 7-8pm EST
This is a course designed to give students practice speaking. I keep the number to five participants. 

  • Theodoret of Cyr, Commentary on Genesis (For intermediate students; 3 hrs/week)
    • Tues & Thurs 7-8:30pm EST
Theodoret was a prolific younger contemporary of Chrysostom, Jerome, and Augustine. In his later life, he  wrote a simple commentary on the first eight book of the Septuaginta. We will be looking at Genesis itself and at how Theodoret fits into the larger world of Christian interpretation in his day.

  • Plato on beginning to philosophize, Alcibiades I (For advanced students; 3 hrs/week)
    • Sat & Sun 10:30-noon EST
Ever since Feuerbach, Plato's authorship of Alcibiades I has been in doubt, but it was for over two millennia the introduction to philosophy for many. We will see why.

Mihi natalis dies erat

Idibus novembris... I published this on Facebook last year, but never posted it here.  It is the date of Augustine's birth. How do we know that his birth occurred on Nov. 13, or rather on the Ides of November? He tells us himself in his preface, addressed to Flavius Manlius Theodorus, of his De Beata Vita, written in 386-87. For Theodorus, you can read Claudian's Panegyricus dictus Theodoro (if you like late antique panegyric). Augustine, within a decade, ended up regretting his admiration of Theodorus (see Conf. vii.9.13). I've introduced this frustulum in Eng lish since, like most quotations taken from prefaces addressed to one person, I found it did not stand well on its own.
