Quin Philosophemur Winter/Spring Courses

 Course for February and March

Send me an email to sign up. First come, first served.

8 Weeks

Cost: $250/course

Schedule: Feb 2 – March 29

  • Intermediate Conversational Latin:  Intermediate, say language teachers, is all about "me". While being able to talk about oneself is necessary, nobody wants to be that person who can't shut up about themselves. We'll get to know each other and learn the practice of dialogue: how do we take turns, what facilitates this, how do we agree and disagree. These are just some of the skills we will be focusing on to move to more advanced ranges of speaking.
Schedule: MWF, 7-8pm EST
Participant cap: 5
  • Plato's Cratylus. A perplexing dialogue about the nature of language. We will be putting this into the context of current discussions of iconicity in language (particulary the maluma/takete effect), and we will be looking at modern scholar's opinions on the dialogue (Sallis, Sedley, and others).
Schedule: Sat & Sunday 10:30-noon EST
Participant cap: 8
  • Augustine. He's back in the headlines. Somehow, he always seems contemporary, so we will look at the recently much-discussed ordo amoris in the context of ancient ethics and the ancient agrarian economy that ran on enslaved labor.
Schedule: Tues & Thurs 7-8:30pm EST
Participant cap: 8
